铜雕分为两类：一是铜刻，即在平面铜材上进行平面刻画，题材有绘画和书法等也称手工铜版画;一是圆铜雕，是用铜材进行立体雕镂，题材有人物、动物、几何图形等。南京铜雕以后者为主。因为铜的硬度比较低，铜雕就是在原料上进行雕刻。南京铜雕在全国有着独特的地位，是国内唯一传承这一传统技艺的地区，影响极其广泛。
